Unit 1 – Digital Media Checklist

Completed OER Checklist (Resource 1): Download here

Developing this OER checklist was a helpful exercise in considering various aspects of potential multimedia sources. One big thing I learned was about the different licenses available on Youtube videos. They carry either the standard Youtube license or a Creative Commons license. The standard license does not allow for any modifications, so that is something to consider before choosing a video to evaluate. If you are looking for a video you can modify, you can adjust your search parameters to filter by only Creative Commons licensed videos.

The checklist was also a helpful reminder to evaluate the resource based on the purpose it should serve and the audience it is intended for. For example, my course is geared towards staff members, while video’s the instructions included choosing between work and personal accounts. This part may not be applicable to my audience when they are setting up their OneDrive. In the next version, I will add a section to specify which course learning outcome that the source will support.

By using the checklist, I have concluded that the video I evaluated will probably not be a great fit for my course, because I cannot modify it under its license, and it would need some tweaking to be appropriate for my course. I will add another section in my next adjustment of the OER checklist to specify whether or not the resource is recommended to be used in the course.
